Innovative Waste Management

The average person generates 4.3 pounds of waste per day. Where does that trash go when it is thrown “away”? There is no such place as “away.” ┬áThe recycling and waste management industries have drastically evolved over the last five decades with technological and functional advances improving the environmental impact of landfills. However, this has simultaneously caused a significant reduction in the number of landfills available to accommodate an ever-growing waste stream. Innovating waste management is about finding a better way.

Upcycling is the Answer

Reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of a higher quality or value than the original

Imagine this design assignment: Design something that makes oxygen, sequesters carbon, fixes nitrogen, distills water, accrues solar energy as fuel, makes complex sugars and food, creates microclimates, changes colors with the seasons and self-replicates. Well, why don’t we knock that down and write on it?

Cradle to Cradle

In Spring 2017, Blue Star Recycling, LLC will establish collocated recycling and MSW Type IV landfill (C&D) facilities that will contribute to the alleviation of MSW challenges, the creation of local jobs, and offer a positive impact on the environment. With no need to divert intake, BSR will innovate for its customers by addressing the five biggest problems with landfills today: (1) customer service, (2) high minimum charge, (3) poor facility conditions, (4) equipment damage, and (5) hours of operations. And we will focus our own efforts on feeding the upcycle!
